Thoughts on WWE Being Behind in the Times

I'm a pretty big wrestling fan. I know it's scripted. So are Love and Hip-Hop and New Girl.

Now that that's out the way, I just read that WWE is going to have Grumpy Cat "host" RAW next week.

This is after such amazing guest hosts as NeNe Leakes, The Muppets, Jerry Springer, Ariel Winter, and Jared Fogle (the Subway guy). What do all of these guest hosts have in common with Grumpy Cat?

Not only are most of these guest hosts past their expiration date in terms of "popularity," they have nothing to do with professional wrestling. Now, don't get me wrong. When Raquel makes me sit down and watch RHoA, I find NeNe's "character" to be both funny and just the right amount of b-word that you want her to get her comeuppance ad nauseam. I also like Ariel Winter's snarky character on Modern Family. But, I don't want to watch A.J. Lee come out and fear that NeNe is going to completely ruin an already horrible segment by adding in her antics. And, even if Ariel Winter was in the abysmal The Chaperone movie with Triple H, I don't want to see her in the ring with anyone, not even Hornswoggle and The Great Khali.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Thankfully, guest hosts have less to do with the talent these days. They aren't always running into shenanegins or turning on Shawn Michaels and knocking him out (legit awesome moment). And some, like Aaron Paul, are pretty cool; those are usually the ones that legit care about WWE. But, when will WWE stop trying to get mainstream attention through bringing on (usually) fringe celebrities that don't know a Rock Bottom from a (mud)hole in the ground?

Or, you know, are non-human? Now, I'm not one of those smarks that hates comedy segments. I just like my WWE comedy to still have something to do with what I'm really watching WWE for: sports entertainment with an emphasis on sports.

Oh, and crazy spots. Thank you Jeff Harvey.
