Thoughts on...the Terps

Wow. So, for the first time in a few years, the Terps are all but destined to make some major waves in March. I'll be honest: when the season started, I didn't think Mark Turgeon and company would be able to do much in their first season in the B1G. However, they've exceeded expectations and have proved themselves as a team to watch for at least the next few seasons. Why? There are a couple reasons. I'll give three.

I refuse to hype Ninja Turtle Testudo...

1) Turgeon isn't Gary Williams.

But here's the thing: he doesn't need to be, nor should he try to be. Maryland brought Turgeon in to be Mark Turgeon, Texas A&M wunderkind, not Mark Turgeon, the guy who's living in Gary's shadow. In four years, Turgeon has escaped the shadow of Gary and has filled the team with people who work best for him.

2) Melo Trimble is the truth.

Not since Greivis Vasquez has there been as much of a buzz in College Park over a freshman. Yes, Terrell Stoglin came close, but Melo doesn't have the "bad aura" that some suggested Stoglin did. Plus, I'm a Stoglin fan, but he took/takes a lot of unnecessary shots. Trimble has to, at the least, be in conversations for Freshman of the Year and he's been a very vital part of Maryland's successes and that's with Dez Wellls and other upperclassmen on the team.

3) The "Why Not?" attitude of the football team has seemingly been passed on, with great success.

So, let's be for real: the Terps have proven they're the real deal. Let's hope they continue to kick you-know-what during March Madness.
