Thoughts on The Devil is a Part-Timer

On the advice of my resident anime recommendee Dre, I checked this one out. Like Haruhi, The Devil is a Part-Timer is a slice-of-life anime that was based on a light novel series. And like Haruhi, it deals with a plethora of otherwordly entities living in the confines of a "normal" world. However, where Haruhi and company got into most of their misadventures because they wanted to keep Haruhi from being bored, and thus destroying the world, the characters of The Devil is a Part-Timer have a different motive.

See, the series, obviously, is about a devil (THE Devil, to be more precise) who, along with one of his commanders, the hero who was trying to slay the devil, and more, were transported into modern-day Japan. In modern-day Japan, for whatever reason, they can't full-on use their devil/hero powers, so they get real jobs in the hopes of either taking over earth or gaining enough resources to kill the devil. As the series progresses, we get a lot of deconstruction. The "devil" of the series, Satan/Sadou, is shown in his "human state" to be less of a devil with ulterior motives and more of an actual human who wants to be the best fast-food manager he can be. Our "hero," Emilia/Emi, sees this and starts to think that Sadou's really just doing this to take over the world. However, a moment early on in the series begins to (possibly) dispel this notion.

The series is full of comedic moments. These are usually achieved by taking typical slice-of-life tropes, adding in some millennial commentary, and inverting the whole thing until it makes as much sense as it doesn't make any at all. The characters are pretty fleshed out from their fantasy game stereotypes, even when the full-force "typical" anime battle takes place. All in all, without giving too much away, if you're looking for a series that's essentially the anime equivalent of Clerks. (and does the Evangelion biblical conspiracy craziness in a less obtuse way--along with some great existentialist thoughts), check it out. The first episode is available below via Hulu (it's available in dub through Funimation, but Hulu has the subbed version for free).
